Description

The Bard of Cloghbrack by Martin O’Halloran is a beautifully researched literary and historical work dedicated to the life and poetry of Michael Luke Pháidín Coyne, an Irish-language poet from Cloghbrack Upper, County Mayo. Through meticulous archival research, O’Halloran rescues the work of a largely forgotten writer whose talent flourished before his untimely death in 1916.

Born into an Irish-speaking family, Michael Coyne received only a limited formal education before emigrating to Pennsylvania, where he worked in the coal mines of Scranton and later Pittsburgh. Despite the hardships of emigrant life, he composed poetry that reflected his love of Ireland, the Irish language, the people of Cloghbrack, and the emotional realities of separation and exile. While many of his poems were thought to have been lost, this volume recovers and presents 23 poems, including 12 previously unpublished works. Each poem is printed in the original Irish alongside a carefully translated English version, making the collection accessible to both Irish speakers and general readers.

More than a poetry collection, the book places Coyne’s writings within their historical and cultural setting. O’Halloran provides extensive commentary explaining the people, places, customs, and events referenced in the poems, allowing readers to appreciate the social history of rural Mayo at the turn of the twentieth century.

The volume is richly illustrated with reproductions of original manuscript pages, handwritten notes by Professor Tomás Ó Máille, and material from the Dúchas National Folklore Collection, giving readers a rare glimpse into the preservation of Irish literary heritage.
